Dr Mahsheed Ansari’s Book Launch

November 22, 2023

Last night, just before the Conference dinner, AAIMS celebrated Dr Mahsheed Ansari’s new book publication titled Modern Debates on Prophecy and Prophethood in Islam: Muhammad Iqbal and Said Nursi, published by Routledge. The book was celebrated and launched by Islamic Studies scholar and Teaching Professor of Islam and Science at the University of Notre Dame, Mahan Mirza.

ABOUT THE BOOK

While prophethood is the backbone of the Islamic tradition and an uncompromised tenet of faith, the impact of modernity with its ambivalent status afforded to the prophet and institution of prophethood shook many Muslim scholars. Through analysis of these modern debates on prophethood in Islam, this book situates Muhammad Iqbal’s (1877–1938) and Said Nursi’s (1877–1960) discourses within it and assesses their implications on the modern period. This book introduces the “what, who and how” of the prophets in the Islamic tradition. It unveils the rich Islamic literature of both the classical and modern periods and analyses the construction of their philosophies and theologies. Concise in both historical and textual analyses, this book makes an important contribution to our understanding of contemporary debates on prophecy and prophethood in Islam and will be of great interest to postgraduate students and researchers of Islam, religious studies, medieval studies and contemporary studies of Islam and religion.

AAIMS Conference 2023

July 11, 2023

On the 21-22 November of this year, come and join us at the wonderful grounds of the University of Western Australia to engage in scholarly discussions, enjoy morning tea, and network with others in the field of Islamic Studies!
AAIMS is thrilled to announce another conference as part of its service to members. Held at the University of Western Australia, the theme of the conference is Islam in a Polarised World. So much has happened since 2001, and so much more since 2021. Islam is one of the fastest growing religions in the world, and it is one of the most ethnically diverse and interconnected of faiths, too, allowing Islam to blossom – and sometimes not – in the merging multipolarity of global politics.
This conference, therefore, draws attention to the roles, contemporary place, and future of Islam in the emerging multipolarity in global politics with its accompanying shifting power relations and turbulences. It also draws attention to the multiple forms of cultural, political and religious ‘polarisations’ both in the local and global contexts and what these mean for not just peaceful co- existence but also Islam and Muslims in both Muslim majority and Muslim minority contexts.
Proposals of up to 300 words are welcome and are due by 31 July 2023 to be reviewed on an ongoing basis by members of the AAIMS organising committee.
The conference itself will be held a few months later, in November. If you would like further information about the Call for Proposals, click here.

We hope to see you there!

How to Publish in a Q1 Journal Event

June 27, 2023

Last week on Thursday we held a very successful and lively workshop with Dr Jan Ali and Mirela Cufurovic on the topic ‘How to Publish in a Q1 Journal’. This session was facilitated by Dr Eva Nisa and we had many attend. It was wonderful to see PhD students and ECR’s attend from many different universities across Australia and overseas.

Dr Jan Ali presented on how to publish in a Q1 journal, what is required for authors when choosing to publish in a Q1 journal, addressed the ins-and-outs of the publishing process from the perspective of a guest editor, and explored how to market oneself to a Q1 journal.

Mirela Cufurovic presented on the importance of collaboration, especially for PhD students and ECR’s, the importance of sticking to the journal template when publishing in a Q1 journal, and how to actively and respectfully engage in the editing process upon receiving reviewer feedback.

AAIMS would like to thank Dr Jan Ali and Mirela Cufurovic for their presentation. We have received positive feedback and hope to host more events like these in the future! A big thank you to Dr Eva Nisa for facilitating the presentations and guiding the Q&A’s. It was great to see engagement and interest from the audience.

If you attended the event and would love to leave some feedback, please email AAIMS at info@aaims.org.au.  We value your feedback!
