Thank you 2022; Welcome 2023!

December 28, 2022

We wish all our members a wonderful holiday season! We thank you all for your commitment to AAIMS and for continually sharing your wonderful achievements with us. We also thank you for all you’ve done to help us grow in 2022 and are excited to begin the new year with you again!

Throughout 2022, we have shared member publications and achievements across our social media platforms and our new and improved website, and we continue to encourage you to share your achievements with us through our hashtag #sharewithaaims.

In early March, we received submissions for our Riaz Hassan Honours prize, and we’ve had some great theses come through. The winner for the prize will be announced soon! We thank everyone who submitted their honours thesis for consideration. We value scholarship that emerges from the field of Islamic Studies and it is an honour to cherish the scholarship legacy of Riaz Hassan himself who played an instrumental role in the development of AAIMS as a thriving association for scholars in this field.

In August we hosted a Grant-Making workshop, facilitated by Professor Sarah Phillips from the University of Sydney. We thank everyone who attended the event and benefited from the workshop. If you have suggestions for future workshops you’d like to see from us, please do email us at info@aaims.org.au.

In September, we launched a new website with exclusive member benefits! This new website features exciting new content and pages that benefit our members directly. You can also update your profile to increase your academic visibility across the field of Islamic Studies. The website also allows you to ask questions in our new member forum feature, so if you have something to share or something to say, head on over to our Member Forum to get some exciting discussions going!

Earlier this month we hosted an Islamic Studies Postgraduate conference. We thank everyone who attended the event and benefitted from the program. We hope the conference sparked an interest in Islamic Studies – and the field of humanities in general – and we hope to see you tune into another one of our conferences in the future!

We wish you all a lovely new year,

Highlights from the Postgraduate Conference

December 14, 2022

On December 8, 2022, AAIMS, in partnership with Western Sydney University, Charles Sturt University, and the Islamic Sciences and Research Academy, hosted its second Postgraduate Islamic Studies Conference at the WSU Bankstown campus. The conference explored the various ways academics could explore and learn from the study of Islamic Studies.

Islamic Studies examines Islam and its adherents to provide deep and comprehensive explanation of Islam as a lived tradition and Muslims as a diverse and growing community. Those who study Islam and Muslims often do so from different disciplinary or theoretical perspectives, making Islamic studies a multidisciplinary academic program. Under Islamic studies, scholars and students examine a wide range of topics including: Islamic civilization, Islamic history and historiography, Islamic Law (shari’ah), Islamic Theology (kalām), Sufism (mysticism), Arabic, Islamic philosophy, Islamic scriptures (Qur’an and Hadiths), and Qur’anic exegesis (tafsīr). Many contemporary scholars and students who work in the area of Islamic studies have adopted analytical tools and methods in their investigative endeavours usually used in humanities, such as philosophy, anthropology, and sociology.

The 2022 Postgraduate Islamic Studies Conference II therefore explored the inner complexities of Islam as a complete way of life and its variety of rituals, practices, and teachings embedded in the pattern of Muslim everyday living using modern academic tools, scientific research methods, and theoretical frameworks. It fostered and disseminated ongoing and new research about Islam and Muslims in national and international contexts.

We thank everyone who attended the event and shared their photos and wonderful experience with us over our social media platforms! Below are some of the pictures that were captured on the day. If you have more to share, please tag us #sharewithaaims.

Thank you!

Congratulations to Professor Tim Lindsey and Ihsan Yilmaz

Riaz Hassan Prize

November 25, 2022

Congratulations to AAIMS Advisory Board Member Professor Tim Lindsey on his ARC Discovery Grant Success! Lindsey’s ARC grant will fund a project focusing on Obstacles to Contract Enforcement in Indonesia. Big congratulations also go to AAIMS member Ihsan Yilmaz on his ARC DP grant success! The ARC grant will fund a project exploring how civilisational populist rulers polarise societies mainly along religious lines.

About the Projects
Professor Tim Lindsey
The Australia-Indonesia Comprehensive Economic Partnership (IA-CEPA) came into force in 2020 but foreign investment in Indonesia has consistently failed to meet targets, largely due to concerns about the lack of reliable and just judicial contract enforcement. This project aims to investigate why predictable and fair contract enforcement in Indonesia is so inaccessible, particularly for foreign investors, and, through doctrinal and empirical research, explain the causes of this situation. In partnership with Indonesian courts and lawyers, it also aims to support the development of legal and policy reform proposals that can help resolve Indonesia’s commercial contract enforcement problems and encourage Australian investment there.

Ihsan Yilmaz
Civilisational populist rulers polarise societies mainly along religious lines. They also interfere with their emigrants, mobilising supporters against other expatriates. This project aims to advance knowledge of authoritarian states’ transnational influence on social cohesion and inter-group conflict. By studying Islamist and Hindutva civilisations mobilisations, their reach into their emigrants via digital technologies, and their impact on Turkish and Indian groups in Australia, the project aims to assist policy makers and community groups by generating conceptual frameworks, benchmarking data, and recommendations for making policies to deal with this phenomenon’s negative effects and for developing intervention strategies.

All the best,

New Look, Same Association

September 22, 2022

Over the past few weeks, you may have noticed that we’ve been a little quiet on our previous website. And it is because AAIMS has been busy trying to create a new experience for its members.

With this new website, we hope that our members can have a seamless experience and direct access to opportunities that AAIMS has to offer. There are a few new things our members should become familiar with:

  1. Members can now create their own profile with us, update their publications, insert their own cover and profile images, build connections with existing members by adding them as ‘Friends’, and gaining exclusive access to member only benefits.
  2.  New and existing members will be listed in our Member Directory. This means that your profile will be readily available and discoverable by anyone exploring our website, which increases your scholarly exposure.
  3. Members will have access to an exclusive Members Only section on our website. Only paid members will be able to access the content. This is great as it means that members can feel part of the AAIMS community!
  4. Members can meet, discuss, and raise questions on our new Member Forum! This is an exciting opportunity for members to connect with scholars in their field, and to share upcoming news, events, and opportunities with other AAIMS members.
Aside from member benefits, our new website is user-friendly for all who visit! You can learn more about AAIMS via our About tab, including information about our Riaz Hassan Prize and our Conferences. You can access our public Upcoming Events, Workshops, and Call for Papers, including News!

Both Members and non-Members alike can not join AAIMS hassle free! See our Become a Member page for more details.

We are excited about this new change! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us via our Contact page.

We are always happy to help!

Honouring Professor Riaz Hassan

June 9, 2022

We are saddened to hear about the passing of Professor Riaz Hassan—an important part of the Australian Association of Islamic and Muslim Studies (AAIMS). Professor Riaz Hassan was part of the AAIMS Advisory Board and one of the association’s greatest supporters.

Due to his wonderful work in the field of Islamic and Muslim studies, including his unending support of our association, we named our yearly honours prize after him—something he was greatly touched by. The Riaz Hassan Prize celebrates the academic achievements of honours students by selecting the best honours thesis in the allocated year the prize is held. Students are recognised for their outstanding academic achievement and win a prize of $500 AUD.

Professor Hassan’s work and contribution was so well recognised and respected, that almost all academics in Australia, and in the research area of Islamic and Muslim studies, knew of him, benefited from his research, and cited his work. He was a brilliant sociologist who made valuable contributions to the discipline.

He was also more than that for many of our academics.

Professor Hassan was a mentor, a friend, and a father figure for many.

We hope we can continue to honour Professor Riaz Hassan by continuing to offer the Riaz Hassan Prize every year.

Wishing his family patience during this difficult time.

Our condolences,
