AAIMS is delighted to share the wonderful news that Associate Professor Eva F. Nisa (Australian National University), a member of the AAIMS Executive Committee, has been elected President of the Asian Studies Association of Australia (ASAA) for the 2027/28 membership cycle.

The ASAA announced the appointment on 23 October 2026 as part of the formation of its new Council. Associate Professor Nisa, a cultural anthropologist and ARC DECRA Fellow, is widely recognised for her expertise in Islamic studies, including her research on halal standardisation in Indonesia and Malaysia. The ASAA highlighted the depth of administrative experience and international standing she brings to the role. She will take up the presidency in 2027, following her service as Vice President of the Association.

She will lead the Association alongside a new Executive Committee, including Professor Sharyn Davies (Monash University) as Vice President, Dr Qiuping Pan (University of Melbourne) as Secretary, and Dr Adam Zulawnik (University of Melbourne) as Treasurer. The ASAA has also announced a broader Council representing a range of regions and member groups.

On behalf of the entire AAIMS community, we extend our warmest congratulations to Associate Professor Nisa on this well-deserved achievement. Her leadership strengthens the visibility of Islamic and Muslim studies within the wider field of Asian studies in Australia, and we look forward to seeing the Association flourish under her guidance. 🌟
