Riaz Hassan Prize
The Riaz Hassan prize for the Best Masters of Research Thesis and Best Doctoral Thesis signals a commitment by AAIMS to promote knowledge and scholarship in Islamic and Muslim studies. The aim of the prize is to encourage junior scholars to pursue further research in the field whereby applicants are invited to submit their Masters or Doctoral thesis for consideration.
The award honours the late Emeritus Professor Riaz Hassan AM, who was a foundational figure in Islamic Studies across Australia and held positions of eminence at Flinders University, the National University of Singapore (NUS), Gadjah Mada University, University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and Yale University.
The Australian Association of Islamic and Muslim Studies (AAIMS) is pleased to announce the 2025 Riaz Hassan Prize for the Best Master’s by Research Thesis and Best Doctoral Thesis, reaffirming our commitment to advancing high-quality scholarship in the field of Islamic and Muslim studies.
This annual award, open to eligible candidates, aims to encourage emerging scholars by recognising outstanding postgraduate research. We warmly invite submissions from candidates who have completed a Master’s by Research or Doctoral thesis on topics related to Islam and/or Muslim societies.
The prize honours the legacy of the late Emeritus Professor Riaz Hassan, a foundational figure in Islamic Studies in Australia and internationally. Professor Hassan held distinguished academic appointments at Flinders University, the National University of Singapore (NUS), Gadjah Mada University, the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and Yale University.
Eligibility & Submission Guidelines:
- Theses must have been submitted at an Australian university for a Master’s by Research or a Doctor of Philosophy/Professional Doctorate between 2024 and 2025.
- Submissions must be made by a university department or supervisor.
- Each submission must include: A supporting statement from the supervisor or the department delegate, and examiner’s reports.
Scope:
AAIMS welcomes theses from across the humanities and social sciences, including but not limited to:
- Sociology
- Political Science
- History
- Anthropology
- Media and Cultural Studies
- Law and Legal Studies
- Philosophy
- Theology and Religious Studies

Prize:
The two winning scholars (1 x Masters; 1 x Doctoral) will be awarded:
- A Certificate of Recognition
- A $500 prize
- Recognition on the AAIMS website
- 2025 Submissions Open!
