This special issue invites original research exploring intersections between religion/Islamic tradition and wellbeing or resilience. Relevant disciplines include theology, Islamic spirituality, ethics, sociology, psychology, law, contemporary studies, Qur’an and Sunnah studies, comparative religion, spiritual care, and community health.

Themes may include but are not limited to:

  • Religious practices or theology as enablers of mental health, coping, and resilience
  • Community-based or faith-informed interventions in Muslim contexts
  • Spirituality and psychological wellbeing among individuals or diasporic Muslim groups
  • Islamic ethics or jurisprudence in promoting resilience and human flourishing
  • Comparative perspectives across religious traditions or cultures
  • Qur’anic and Prophetic models of resilience
  • The role of spiritual practices, such as du’a and dhikr, for improved wellbeing
  • The relationship between spiritual, mental and emotional wellbeing
  • Islamic concepts of the soul and their relevance to mental health
  • Religious coping strategies in times of crisis (e.g., displacement, pandemics, natural disasters)
  • Faith-based counselling and psychotherapy models
  • The role of religious leadership in fostering community resilience
  • Youth resilience and religious identity in secular or pluralistic societies
  • Islamic approaches to trauma healing and post-traumatic growth
  • Islamic theological responses to suffering and meaning making
  • The role of faith in building resilience
  • Faith-based schools’ strategy for instilling youth with resilience and wellbeing
  • Socio-political factors negatively impacting Muslim resilience and wellbeing and Muslims’ coping strategies

Submission Guidelines

  • Articles should be between 6,000–8,000 words (excluding references) and conform to AJIS style guidelines.
  • Submissions must be made through the AJIS online submission system.
  • All manuscripts will undergo double-blind peer review.
  • Accepted articles will be published as part of this special issue of AJIS.
