About

The Australian National University Centre for Arab and Islamic Studies is pleased to host the first research workshop examining topics related to the economies of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), to be held in hybrid format on 7 December 2022.

This workshop seeks to bring together recent and cutting-edge scholarship on the economies of MENA. It will prize multidisciplinary research on studying the economies of the region including emerging economic challenges and opportunities. It aims to discuss how international actors, including Australia, engage with these trends.

The workshop is looking for fresh insights, both theoretically and empirically, that would enable the academic and policy communities in Australia and the wider Asia-Pacific to gain a deeper understanding of the economies of MENA. It invites multidisciplinary economic research submissions on MENA economies, which include (but are not limited to) topics related to:

  • International trade and investment
  • International finance and macroeconomics
  • Labour mobility and migration
  • Fiscal policy and taxation
  • Income and wealth inequality
  • Environmental issues, energy transition, and climate change policies
  • The impact of the Coronavirus outbreak
  • Islamic economics and finance
  • Digitization
  • Distributed ledger technology and cryptocurrency
  • Conflict economics
  • Political economy
  • Economic diversification

Papers that do not fit into these categories, but that are related to the study of the economies of MENA, are also welcome. Contributors should submit a draft paper or an abstract (300-400 words) and a biography (100 words) in one PDF file by 7 November 2022. The organizing committee will select the workshop papers based on analytical rigor and originality and will contact the authors whose papers have been selected by 10 November 2022.

Paper and abstract submissions and workshop enquiries: anas.iqtait@anu.edu.au

Authors of selected papers will be invited to submit an extended version for a special issue. This is a hybrid event with attendance through both in-person mode and online mode.

Important Dates:

  • Deadline for abstract and paper summary submissions: 7 November 2022
  • Notification of selected submissions: 10 November 2022
  • Deadline for submission of full papers: 1 December 2022
  • Registration opens: 14 November 2022 (no registration fee will be required)
  • Workshop Date: 7 December 2022

The workshop will serve as a research hub for economic researchers of MENA in Australia and Asia-Pacific and will establish the MENA Economic Research Network. The Network will provide a platform for Australia and Asia-Pacific based academics, researchers, policy makers, and industry practitioners to engage in multidisciplinary economic research on MENA. The MENA Economic Research Network is envisaged to host periodic workshops, seminars, and working papers. It will serve as an incubator for academic and policy related research on the economics of MENA.
