New Look, Same Association

September 22, 2022

Over the past few weeks, you may have noticed that we’ve been a little quiet on our previous website. And it is because AAIMS has been busy trying to create a new experience for its members.

With this new website, we hope that our members can have a seamless experience and direct access to opportunities that AAIMS has to offer. There are a few new things our members should become familiar with:

  1. Members can now create their own profile with us, update their publications, insert their own cover and profile images, build connections with existing members by adding them as ‘Friends’, and gaining exclusive access to member only benefits.
  2.  New and existing members will be listed in our Member Directory. This means that your profile will be readily available and discoverable by anyone exploring our website, which increases your scholarly exposure.
  3. Members will have access to an exclusive Members Only section on our website. Only paid members will be able to access the content. This is great as it means that members can feel part of the AAIMS community!
  4. Members can meet, discuss, and raise questions on our new Member Forum! This is an exciting opportunity for members to connect with scholars in their field, and to share upcoming news, events, and opportunities with other AAIMS members.
Aside from member benefits, our new website is user-friendly for all who visit! You can learn more about AAIMS via our About tab, including information about our Riaz Hassan Prize and our Conferences. You can access our public Upcoming Events, Workshops, and Call for Papers, including News!

Both Members and non-Members alike can not join AAIMS hassle free! See our Become a Member page for more details.

We are excited about this new change! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us via our Contact page.

We are always happy to help!

Happy browsing,

Honouring Professor Riaz Hassan

June 9, 2022

We are saddened to hear about the passing of Professor Riaz Hassan—an important part of the Australian Association of Islamic and Muslim Studies (AAIMS). Professor Riaz Hassan was part of the AAIMS Advisory Board and one of the association’s greatest supporters.

Due to his wonderful work in the field of Islamic and Muslim studies, including his unending support of our association, we named our yearly honours prize after him—something he was greatly touched by. The Riaz Hassan Prize celebrates the academic achievements of honours students by selecting the best honours thesis in the allocated year the prize is held. Students are recognised for their outstanding academic achievement and win a prize of $500 AUD.

Professor Hassan’s work and contribution was so well recognised and respected, that almost all academics in Australia, and in the research area of Islamic and Muslim studies, knew of him, benefited from his research, and cited his work. He was a brilliant sociologist who made valuable contributions to the discipline.

He was also more than that for many of our academics.

Professor Hassan was a mentor, a friend, and a father figure for many.

We hope we can continue to honour Professor Riaz Hassan by continuing to offer the Riaz Hassan Prize every year.

Wishing his family patience during this difficult time.

Our condolences,
